Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the effect of ophthalmic gel application on ocular irritation induced by eye shield for radiotherapy and radiation transmission.

Methods: Ten eyes of 10 subjects without ocular disorder were enrolled. The degrees of corneal and conjunctival irritation were compared after eye shield insertion (Prototype Medium Size Tungsten Eye Shield, Jiyeon Medical, Seoul, Korea) without and with hydroxypropylmethylcellulose ophthalmic gel (Hycel, SamilAllergan, Seoul, Korea) application. The amount of radiation transmission without and with ophthalmic gel application was also compared by using the parallel plate chamber after 6MeV (Clinac iX, Varian, Palo Alto, CA, USA) radiation emission.

Results: The degrees of corneal and conjunctival irritation were lower in eyes with ophthalmic gel application compared to those without ophthalmic gel application (p=0.025 for cornea, 0.014 for conjunctiva). Ophthalmic gel did not affect the radiation transmission (p=0.686).

Conclusions: Application of ophthalmic gel was effective for reducing ocular irritation after eye shield insertion without interfering radiation transmission.
